The IBM executive responsible for bringing the personal computer to the masses has died, it was reported Thursday. He was 72.
William C. Lowe oversaw the birth of the first IBM PC, which reached retail stores in 1981.
His daughter Michelle Marshall said Lowe died of a heart attack on October 19 in Lake Forest, Illinois.
According to the website of the company, Lowe was a laboratory director at the IBM facility in Boca Raton, Florida and convinced his bosses that he could assemble a team capable of building a personal computer in a year. To do this, used parts and programs outsourced.
The first IBM personal computer cost $ 1.565 and did not include a monitor.
